The Russian Defence Ministry today released some maps, satellite pictures and videos that allegedly prove that Turkish government, along with the President Erdoğan and his family, involved in ISIS oil trade.
There are four main problems with this claim.
1- OIL SMUGGLED THROUGH YPG HELD AREAS?
The map that Russian generals provided showing three main ISIS oil trade routes and they are passing through Kurdish group YPG-held territories. (Yellow areas on the map).
YPG is an arch enemy of ISIS.
2- THE MAP IS OUTDATED
The map itself also outdated because some areas shown as ISIS controlled have changed hands in the last couple of months.
This map shows the current military situation in Syria, dated November 25.
3- THERE IS NO OIL TANKERS
Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov, during the briefing to the reporters, repeated the claim that “oil tankers” were getting in and out of Turkey without facing any problem. All the pictures provided by the Russians show there are no tankers but only trucks carrying goods and containers.
4- THE REFINERY OWNED BY A GOVERNMENT CRITIC
The Russian officials claim that the ISIS oil ends up with an oil refinery in Batman. The refinery is belonging to Turkish Petroleum Refineries (TUPRAS), which is owned by one of the fierce critics of Turkish Government, Koc Holding.
