We witnessed a number of violent attacks by militant organizations in cities around the world recently. In the last terror attack carried out in Pakistan, at least 74 people were killed and 338 others were wounded in a suicide bombing that hit the main entrance of Gulshan-e-Iqbal Amusement Park in Lahore. Many of the victims were children.
However, as many people have pointed out on social media, the world’s reaction to attacks outside of “the West” has been different than the reaction to those in “the West.” For that reason, we compiled a list of reactions to armed militant attacks from the Western countries displayed in social media profiles or mainstream newspapers after the attacks carried out in Western cities such as Paris and Brussels. Clearly, responses are different when attacks are carried out in “non-Western” cities such as İstanbul, Ankara, or Lahore. Here is our list of reactions created to show support for Brussels and Paris which did not happen after the Lahore or Ankara attacks. This is what can be called a “double standard”:
2) World leaders including Germany, Italy, Britain as well as Israel did not walk arm-in-arm in these cities with millions to protest the attacks.
3) President Obama did not order all United States flags on public buildings and grounds to be lowered to half-staff.
4) The NYT did not publish the stories of each of the attack victims from Turkey and Pakistan.
5) A minute’s silence to remember attack victims was not held for Pakistan.
